Deadly Floods in Nepal

Late in August 2026, catastrophic floods hit the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river systems in Nepal. The floods are the result of an ice avalanche in the Nepal-China borderlands. These floods have affected numerous districts throughout the country such as Dhading, Nuwakot and Rasuwa.

In early September, the death toll in Nepal has reached 1,114. This information comes from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. Approximately 4,500 people are still unaccounted for in both the Nepal-China border areas. Search and rescue teams are still actively searching for survivors and recovering the deceased.

Thousands of police have been deployed to assist in these operations. (CNN) Numerous pieces of infrastructure in Nepal have been affected by the floods. A large hydropower plant, Upper Trishuli-1, was heavily affected by the floods. The dam and surrounding structures were washed away by the flood. Hundreds of workers are still unaccounted for.

Humanitarian aid is being provided by the United Nations and other organizations to families who have been displaced by the floods. These resources include clean water, sanitation, shelter and food. The UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal described the event as "a tragic, tragic, tragic event" for both Nepal and the global community.

Several public events have been postponed while aid is being provided across the country.
