Send one paragraph
Not a draft — a paragraph. What happened, why it matters now, and who you would need to talk to. Three or four sentences is plenty.

An editor reads it
Pitches go to the editors named on the masthead. If it is not right for the issue being built, they will say so, and usually what would make it right.

You write it
The desk will read the draft and ask the awkward questions — the second source, the number you did not check, the person you have not called.

It runs with your name on it
Every piece is bylined, and your name goes on the masthead of the issue it runs in.
Every desk is open
Pick the one that fits, or pitch something that fits none of them — those are usually the best ones.
