Chipotle Opens its First Asian Store in Seoul
Three-hour lines at Gangnam, bowls from 12,800 won, and a four-step guide to ordering your first one.

After a long wait, Chipotle Mexican Grill finally opened its first Asian location in Seoul on September 2nd. With the initial announcement of the launch of Chipotle being May of 2026, many of us were on our toes waiting for the grand opening. Founded in 1993, Chipotle has expanded to more than 4,200 locations across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. However, the opening of the Korea location marks the milestone in Chipotle's expansion across Asia. Scott Boatwright, Chipotle's chief executive officer, held a press conference and stated, "South Korea will help us set a benchmark for how Chipotle will grow across Asia."
On the grand opening day, the line stretched across the whole Gangnam station. Some even reported waiting up to 3 hours before ordering. There have been many mixed opinions regarding the food, wait, and price even though it has just opened. Some are saying that it is worth the wait while others recommend trying out chipotle after the lines shorten. The price starts from 12,800 won and can range up to 18,000 won, making it affordable compared to locations in North America. However, pricing is just one part of the experience. Lining up to chipotle can be overwhelming at first because there are so many ingredients to choose from. Therefore, here is a little guide.
- Step 1: Select Base — Choose one from: Burrito / Burrito Bowl / Taco / Salad (Bowl recommended for first-timers!)
- Step 2: Select Rice or Beans — White rice or brown rice, black beans or pinto beans
- Step 3: Protein Selection — Chicken / Steak / Barbacoa (Seasoned Beef) / Carnitas (Pork) / Sofritas (Vegan)
- Step 4: Select Toppings and Sauces — Cheese, lettuce, salsa, sour cream + guacamole (additional charge)
With Chipotle planning on opening in other Asia locations such as Singapore, It still remains a question whether Chipotle can acquire the same level of success across Asia.
Its performance in South Korea may serve as an important indication of how well the brand can adapt to and appeal to consumers in the wider Asian market.
